Nalusa Chito: The Soul Eater (Choctaw)

legend · United States · North American

Nalusa Chito, also known as Impa Shilup ('Soul Eater'), is a great black shadow being of Choctaw legend. If individuals allow evil thoughts, depression, or negativity to enter their minds, Nalusa Chito will creep inside them and devour their souls. Many Choctaw people will not speak its name aloud, for fear of summoning the spirit. The being represents the internal battle against despair and moral weakness. The legend teaches the importance of maintaining a strong, positive spirit and guarding one's thoughts against darkness. Nalusa Chito cannot harm those who keep their hearts and minds pure.
