The Ojibwe creation story tells how Nanabozho, the son of Epingishmook (the West Wind) and a human mother, was born with great spiritual powers. After his mother died, he was raised by his grandmother Nokomis. When the underwater panthers and horned serpents killed his beloved wolf-brother, Nanabozho pursued them and in his rage caused a great flood that covered the earth.
