The Natchez creation tradition centers on the Great Sun, the divine ruler who descended from the sun itself. According to legend, the first Great Sun was born of a woman who was impregnated by a ray of sunlight. This established the Sun lineage, which was matrilineal — the Great Sun was always the son of the Female Sun, and her daughter would be the mother of the next Great Sun.
