Ngai, also known as Mwene Nyaga (the Possessor of Brightness), made his home upon the snow-capped peak of Kirinyaga, Mount Kenya. He is the creator and giver of all things, the union of masculine and feminine principles, the divider of the universe who has no mother, no father, and no companion. From his mountain throne, Ngai watches over the Kikuyu people and all creation. When the Kikuyu need his guidance, they climb to sacred high places or gather beneath the mugumo (fig) tree, raise their hands toward Kirinyaga, and offer sacrifice.
