Nonoma the Spirit of Thunder
Nonoma is the Cheyenne spirit of thunder, a powerful being who controls storms and brings rain to the plains. When Nonoma flaps his wings, thunder rolls across the sky. He is both feared and respected, as his storms can bring life-giving rain or destructive hail. The Cheyenne perform ceremonies to honor Nonoma and ask for his blessing on their crops and buffalo hunts. Thunder is associated with the renewal of life in spring, and the first thunder of the season signals the time for planting and the Sun Dance ceremony.
