Ol' Hige the Vampiric Witch

legend · Jamaica · Caribbean

Ol' Hige is a witch from Jamaican folklore who sheds her skin at night and flies through the air in the form of an owl or a ball of fire. She harms people — especially babies — by sucking their breath while they sleep. Her habit of shedding her skin makes her vulnerable: if someone discovers her empty skin and fills it with salt and pepper, she will be unable to put it back on, burning terribly, and can be killed at dawn. Babies are traditionally protected from Ol' Hige by placing an open Bible in their cribs or using special charms. The figure is of West African origin and is known in Trinida
