Origin of the Seminole Clans (Seminole)
According to Seminole tradition, the clans were established at the time of creation. The Seminole have several matrilineal clans, including the Panther, Bear, Deer, Bird, Wind, and Otter clans. The legend tells that Breathmaker created the animals and asked them to protect the human people. Each animal agreed, and in return, the people would carry the animal's name as a clan. Clan membership determines marriage rules — a person must marry outside their clan — and establishes social obligations and relationships. The clans also have specific roles in ceremonies, including the Green Corn Dance.
