Pamola, the Snow Bird Spirit of Mount Katahdin
Pamola (also called Bemola or Pomola) is a powerful snow bird spirit who dwells on the summit of Mount Katahdin, the highest mountain in Maine and the most sacred peak of the Penobscot and Abenaki people. Pamola has the body of a man and the head and wings of a giant eagle and makes the cold weather by beating his enormous wings. He fiercely guards the mountain against trespassers, sending blizzards to drive away those who dare approach his domain. According to legend, a Penobscot woman once married Pamola and lived with him on the mountain, but she eventually grew homesick and returned to her
