Qamar al-Zaman and the Princess of the Jinn

romance · Iraq · Middle Eastern

A tale from the Arabian Nights about Prince Qamar al-Zaman (Moon of the Age), son of King Shahriman, who refuses marriage and is imprisoned. The princess of the jinn, in a parallel story, also refuses marriage and is imprisoned by her father the jinn king. Through the machinations of a devious jinn and a fairy, they are magically brought together in sleep, each seeing the other in dreams. They fall in love sight unseen, leading to a quest across the realms of men and jinn to unite. The story exemplifies the supernatural romance genre of medieval Arabic literature.
