Qamata (also known as uThixo) is the supreme creator god of the Xhosa people who existed before all things. From a primordial void of darkness and silence, Qamata created the world using Uhlanga, a bed of sacred reeds that became the material for all life. He divided existence into three realms: the sky for himself, the earth for humans, and the underworld for ancestors. From the reeds he made the first humans and gave them life, then created cattle as sacred beings representing prosperity.
