Rana Niejta: Daughter of the Green Earth

myth · Norway · Sami

Rana Niejta is the Sámi spring goddess, daughter of Radien-attje and Raedieahkka. Her name means 'the green' or 'the fertile fields.' She makes the southern slopes of mountains green so hungry reindeer have food after winter. She is one of three divine sisters: Sala Niejta (Sun's daughter) ends winter's cold, Rana Niejta brings forth vegetation, and Saivo Niejta governs the underworld. Together they control the seasonal cycle.
