Snæbjørn was a powerful, brave, and proud servant working for a wealthy farmer in Hvalba on Suðuroy. He was secretly in love with a milkmaid. When a Dutch ship illegally traded luxury goods, Snæbjørn bought four silk scarves for her. The judge sentenced him to four years imprisonment on Bremerholm in Denmark for this crime. Enraged, Snæbjørn struck at the judge but accidentally killed the bailiff instead. He fled into the mountains where his speed, climbing skill, and knowledge of the terrain made capture impossible. Villagers secretly helped him with food and warned him of search parties. He
