Sohni, a beautiful pottery-maker's daughter, fell in love with Izzat Baig (later called Mahiwal), a wealthy merchant from another land who had come to trade. When her family married her to another man, Sohni still swam each night across the Chenab River using an earthenware pot as a float to reach her beloved Mahiwal on the opposite bank. Her sister-in-law, suspecting the affair, replaced Sohni's baked clay pot with an unbaked one.
