Sáráhkká: The Childbirth Goddess
Sáráhkká is the most important birth goddess in Sámi mythology, daughter of Máttaráhkká. She lives under the hearth of the goahti. She places the fetus in the woman's womb. She protects both human women and reindeer during birth. Before birth, women drank 'Sáráhkká's booze' and after, ate 'Sáráhkká's porridge.' Wood was split for her to ease delivery. Female animals were sacrificed after successful births.
