Sufax and the Founding of Tangier
In the syncretic mythology that blends Berber, Greek, and Phoenician traditions, Sufax was the son of the Greek hero Heracles (Hercules) and Tinge, the Berber earth goddess. According to the legend, Heracles performed one of his labors in North Africa, where he met and married Tinge. Their son Sufax founded the city of Tangier, naming it after his mother (Tingis being the ancient name for Tangier). Sufax is also credited with founding parts of Mauritania.
