Two great warrior chiefs, Tangiia and Karika, both arrived at Rarotonga claiming ownership of the island. They fought fiercely, neither able to defeat the other. Realizing their conflict would destroy the land they sought to rule, they agreed to negotiate. Tangiia and Karika divided Rarotonga between them, establishing boundaries through a sacred covenant.
