The Amur River Spirit
A Nanai legend about the powerful spirit of the Amur River, known as the 'Dragon River' or Amur Father. According to tradition, the Amur is a living entity with its own will and consciousness. The river spirit can be generous or wrathful, providing abundant fish to those who respect it and drowning those who offend it. Shamans would perform rituals on the riverbanks to communicate with the Amur spirit, making offerings of millet, tobacco, and rings.
