The Angara River's Escape
A famous Buryat legend about the Angara River, the only river that flows out of Lake Baikal. According to the tale, Baikal had many sons (the rivers that flow into the lake) and one beautiful daughter named Angara. Baikal, a stern and possessive father, kept Angara imprisoned beneath a great rock to prevent her from leaving. But Angara fell in love with the hero Yenisei (the great river) and escaped.
