The Animal Dance
The Animal Dance was a hunting ceremony received by Sweet Medicine at the Sacred Mountain (Bear Butte) to bring success to Cheyenne hunters. In this elaborate ceremony, men dressed as various animals—buffalo, deer, elk, antelope—while members of the Bowstring Society pretended to hunt them. Everything was done backwards for amusement: the animals chased the hunters, and all moved in reverse directions.
