Famine has struck the parish of Bolinge. All the cows have gone dry except for those belonging to the rich, elderly Lady Skinflint and her ugly daughter, who somehow have hundreds of cheeses and tubs of butter from only four cows. When Jerker, the eldest son of the poor farmer Jonson, discovers that his family's cow Star has stopped giving milk, he decides to investigate. He stays awake and catches the family tomte (house spirit), who tells him the answer lies in Lady Skinflint's storeroom.
