The Creation of the World (Fon/Dahomey)
Before the world existed, there was only water, darkness, and the supreme deity Nana Buluku. Nana Buluku gave birth to twins: Mawu, the goddess of the moon and night, and Lisa, the god of the sun and day. Together, Mawu-Lisa created the world. They then gave birth to children who became the heads of the great vodun pantheons: Sogbo (thunder), Sagbata (earth), and Agbe (sea). Mawu created the first humans from clay and taught them how to live in harmony with nature. Lisa brought fire, metal, and civilization. Their androgynous union represents the balance of opposites that governs the universe.
