The Devil's Dance at Bomarsund (Djävulsdansen)
One of Åland's most famous legends, the Devil's Dance tells of a masked ball at the Russian military settlement of Skarpans near Bomarsund in the 1830s–1840s. A mysterious, elegantly dressed stranger arrived at the dance and asked which woman was the finest dancer. A priest's wife stepped forward. The stranger danced with her so wildly that blood came through her shoes. When the musicians stopped playing, the fiddles continued on their own. Finally, a clergyman named Prosten Sadelin was summoned. He confronted the stranger, who revealed a horse's hoof instead of a foot — the Devil himself. Sad
