The Emergence (Jicarilla Apache)
In the Jicarilla Apache emergence story, White God of the East made a mountain that grew toward the sky and caused reeds to stand in the center. Four girls twisted the reeds, stopping their growth. Four ladders were made — black, blue, yellow, and variegated — and placed at the mountain. Whirlwind went to the upper world and found much water. Beaver built dams, Badger followed him, and they reported the land was exposed. The people climbed the ladders, starting with black, then blue, then yellow, and finally variegated. After the last ladder wore out, an old woman and old man remained behind.
