The Epic of Manas: The Birth of the Hero
The Epic of Manas is the longest epic poem in the world (500,000+ lines), central to Kyrgyz national identity. Manas was born to the elderly and childless Jakyp in exile on the Altai. His birth was marked by supernatural signs — a mysterious light filled the tent, the earth trembled, and the sky thundered. Even as an infant, Manas showed extraordinary strength, weighing as much as a thirty-year-old man and greedily eating three sheep stomachs full of butter. From childhood, he gathered forty companions (kyrk choro) and began rallying the scattered Kyrgyz tribes against their Kalmyk and Chinese
