The Fanditha Sorcerer and the Demon of Fuvahmulah

legend · Maldives · South Asian

On the atoll of Fuvahmulah in the Maldives, legend tells of a kan'du fureytha (ocean demon) that emerged from the water as a 'pale, large flame looming over the rocks,' terrifying the islanders. The demon dragged people into the sea, and in despair, the inhabitants of one island sought help from Edhurutakkaange Mohamed Didi, a renowned fanditha veriyaa (sorcerer). Despite working his magic for many days at the reef, the demon kept claiming victims. Tormented by his failed attempts, Mohamed Didi cast one ultimate, all-powerful spell that trapped the evil demon forever within a deserted island.
