The First Areíto Drum
A Taíno legend explaining the origin of the sacred areíto drum. Before the drum, the Taíno remembered everything through spoken words alone, but as elders passed on and storms scattered villages, memories faltered and disputes arose over boundaries and promises. One night, a cacique (chief) prayed to the zemís asking how memory could be protected. From the forest emerged an old man carrying a hollowed log who taught the people to stretch animal hide across one end, creating the first drum.
