The Garamantes were an ancient civilization that flourished in the Fezzan region of southwestern Libya from approximately 1000 BCE to 700 CE. According to Herodotus, who first wrote of them in the 5th century BCE, the Garamantes were a 'very great nation' who cultivated date palms, bred cattle, and hunted cave-dwelling Ethiopians with four-horse chariots.
