Tibetan legends of the Lhamo — powerful female wrathful deities who serve as protectors of the Buddhist teachings. The most famous is Palden Lhamo (Glorious Goddess), the principal female protector deity of Tibetan Buddhism. According to legend, she was a wild, blood-drinking demoness who was converted to Buddhism by the great saint Machik Lapdrön or by Padmasambhava himself.
