Long ago, the Comanche people had no fire and ate their food raw. Coyote, always clever, decided to steal fire from the fire people who guarded it jealously. Coyote crept into their camp and, when they weren't looking, grabbed a burning branch and ran. The fire people chased him across the plains. Coyote threw the fire to the animals, who tossed it among themselves like a hot game. The fire singed the animals in passing—the badger still has black marks, the raccoon's tail was burned, and the coyote's nose was scorched.
