The Girls Who Wished to Marry Stars
Two Ojibwe girls slept outside one summer night, gazing at the stars. They began to wish out loud — one wished to marry the brightest star, the other wished to marry the Morning Star. To their astonishment, the stars descended and took them to the sky world. At first, everything was wonderful beyond imagination, but the girls soon grew homesick. They missed their families and the familiar earth. Their star husbands warned them never to dig in a certain spot, but curiosity overcame them and they dug, creating a hole through which they could see the earth below.
