The Great Head and the Old Woman
Cusick's story of the dispersion of the Great Heads recounts how an old Onondaga woman was sitting alone in her wigwam one evening, parching acorns over the fire, when a monstrous Flying Head appeared at her door. The head was enormous, with blazing eyes and long hair draping like wings. The old woman, showing no fear, continued calmly eating her roasted acorns. The Flying Head watched her crack the hard shells and eat what appeared to be red-hot coals from the fire. Terrified of a being who could eat fire itself, the Flying Head fled and none of its kind were ever seen in that region again. T
