The Hero Twins: Monster Slayer and Child of the Water
In Navajo mythology, Changing Woman gave birth to the Hero Twins, Monster Slayer (Naayééʼ Neizghání) and Child of the Water (Tóbájíshchíní), fathered by the Sun. The twins were born to rid the world of monsters (anaye) that terrorized the people. They journeyed to their father the Sun, passing tests of strength and courage. The Sun tried to kill them with a sweat lodge of stone knives, a heated stone bed, and poisoned smoke, but Spider Woman protected them.
