After their son was lost at sea, a grieving Tlingit couple living in poverty heard whistling outside their home at night. The wife called out, begging her son to come in. Without being seen entering, a figure appeared seated opposite them with his hands over his face. He only whistled by drawing in his breath. Toward midnight, the kushtaka (land-otter-man) revealed himself and brought them devilfish.
