The Legend of Enriquillo and Anacaona
The legend of Enriquillo and Anacaona is one of the most powerful stories of Taino resistance in Hispaniola (modern Dominican Republic and Haiti). Anacaona (Golden Flower) was a Taino queen and cacica (female chief) known for her poetry, music, and diplomacy. She ruled the province of Jaragua and initially sought peaceful coexistence with the Spanish. Despite her efforts, she was captured and executed by hanging in 1503 on false charges of conspiracy. Enriquillo, her nephew, led the most successful Taino rebellion in history from 1519 to 1533, using guerrilla tactics from the Bahoruco Mountain
