The Legend of Red Coulee
The Blackfoot were told by the Snake First Nations about a powerful medicine stone located between McLeod and Fort Benton, Montana, near the Marias River. Years later, a group of Blackfoot men traveled to find the stone. When they discovered it, their leader laughed at the story, calling it a child's tale, and rolled the stone down the hill. On their return journey, they were ambushed in battle. All but one man were killed. The place became known as Red Coulee, and ever after the Blackfoot would leave offerings when passing it, to ensure safety and protection on their journey.
