The Legend of the Betel and the Areca
An ancient Vietnamese legend explaining the origins of the betel nut chewing tradition and the deep bonds of brotherly love and marital fidelity. The story follows twin brothers Tan and Lang who were so identical that only their mother could tell them apart. When their mother died, Tan married a woman who could not distinguish between the brothers. To avoid impropriety, Lang departed secretly and traveled far away, eventually dying on a riverbank and transforming into a limestone rock. Tan searched for his brother in vain and finally died of grief by the same river, turning into an areca tree.
