The Legend of the Blacksmith's Daughter

legend · Tatarstan (Russia) · Central Asian

A beloved Tatar legend tells of a poor blacksmith's daughter whose kindness and skill saved her village. When a terrible drought struck the Volga region, all the wells dried up and the crops failed. The blacksmith's daughter, named Chulpan, prayed to Tengri for help. In a dream, she was shown a hidden spring beneath a sacred birch tree. The next day, she led the villagers to the tree, where they dug and found abundant water. The spring never ran dry, even in the driest summers. Grateful villagers believed that Chulpan was blessed by Su Anasi herself for her pure heart. A version of this legend
