The most sacred Buddhist legend in Myanmar tells the story of the Shwedagon Pagoda's miraculous origins. According to tradition, two merchant brothers from the Mon kingdom of Okkalapa — named Tapussa and Bhallika — were traveling through India when they encountered the newly enlightened Buddha beneath the Bodhi Tree.
