The Legend of the Singing Sands of the Gobi
In the heart of the Gobi Desert lies the Khongoryn Els — the Singing Sands. According to Mongol legend, these massive sand dunes were once a great city ruled by a cruel khan. The khan oppressed his people so terribly that the sky god Tengri cursed the city, burying it under mountains of sand. The souls of the buried inhabitants still cry out beneath the dunes, producing the deep, resonant hum that travelers hear when the wind blows across the sand. Mongol herders say the sands sing loudest before storms, warning travelers of danger ahead.
