The Magpie with Salt on Her Tail

fairy-tale · Sweden · Nordic

A poor boy named Olle (or Theo in some versions) is always wishing for things he cannot afford — a knife, a sled, a horse and carriage. An old man tells him an old legend: if you sprinkle salt on a magpie's tail and make a wish before the salt falls off, the wish will come true. Olle spends days trying to catch a magpie, but they are too clever. Finally, a magpie speaks to him, claiming to be an enchanted prince. The magpie agrees to let Olle sprinkle salt on her tail, but only if he first brings her increasingly extravagant gifts — first a fine knife, then a bicycle, then a sled, then a horse
