The Mantis Creates the Moon from an Ostrich Feather
The San trickster god /Kaggen (the Mantis) broke an eland's gall, which blinded him. Crawling through the darkness, he felt his way to the place of the Ostrich, where he found a long white wing-feather. He threw the feather into the sky to become the Moon, lighting the ground so he could see. This story is one of many celestial creation myths among the /Xam San, explaining the origin of the moon and establishing /Kaggen as a demiurge who shaped the cosmos through his actions, both foolish and wise.
