The Mossy Rock (Blackfoot)
Na'pi (Old Man) was traveling across the plains when he came upon a large moss-covered rock. He stopped to rest and draped his robe over the rock to dry. When he tried to retrieve his robe, the rock refused to give it back. Na'pi grew angry and struck the rock with his stick. The rock split open and Na'pi retrieved his robe, but the rock's anger caused the earth to shake. Na'pi realized he should not have disturbed the rock's peace. The story teaches that one must respect all things in nature, even those that seem inanimate.
