The Näcken (Näkk in Finnish Swedish) is a male water spirit who sits naked among the reeds or under waterfalls, playing hauntingly beautiful violin music. His playing is irresistibly seductive, luring listeners — especially children and young women — toward the water, where they drown. However, the Näcken can be outwitted by those who know the proper countermeasures: if someone learns to play a tune the Näcken cannot match, or if a priest thwarts him with prayer, the spirit can be driven away.
