The Ngoma Drums of the Swahili Coast
The ngoma drum is sacred along the entire Swahili coast, serving as both musical instrument and spiritual vessel. According to legend, the first ngoma was given to the people by sea spirits (pepo) who rose from the Indian Ocean during a storm. The drum's voice could summon rain, heal the sick, and communicate with ancestors. In Zanzibar, it is said that the ngoma drums of the old sultans still beat beneath the sea on moonlit nights, played by the spirits of drowned musicians. The Baganda of Uganda trace their royal lineage to the ngoma, calling themselves 'children of Ngoma.' Among the Swahili
