The Nuxalk Origin of the Sun (Nuxalk)

The Nuxalk people tell that before the sun existed, there was only the dim light of copper-colored darkness. The people prayed constantly to Alhkw'ntam, the Creator, for light. In Nusmata, the house of the gods in the upper world, the Creator's granddaughter Skimina lived. The Four Carpenters created Raven (Qwaxw) from a piece of charcoal to answer the people's prayers. Raven, after being born as Skimina's child, cried persistently for the box containing the globe of light. When Alhkw'ntam finally relented, Raven rolled the globe back and forth until he smashed it against the wall. Light poure
