The Nuxalk people tell that before the sun existed, there was only the dim light of copper-colored darkness. The people prayed constantly to Alhkw'ntam, the Creator, for light. In Nusmata, the house of the gods in the upper world, the Creator's granddaughter Skimina lived. The Four Carpenters created Raven (Qwaxw) from a piece of charcoal to answer the people's prayers.
