The Origin of Sedna
Sedna, once a mortal girl, is betrayed by her father after fleeing a bird-husband. As she clings to the side of her father's kayak during a storm, he cuts off her fingers to save the boat. As her fingers fall into the sea, they transform into the first whales, seals, and walruses. Sedna sinks to the bottom of the ocean, becoming the powerful goddess of the sea who controls the availability of marine animals, requiring shamans to comb her hair to appease her when food is scarce.
