A beautiful young Passamaquoddy woman was visited each night by a mysterious man who came to her lodge after dark. He was kind and gentle, and she grew to love him, though she had never seen his face clearly. Her parents warned her to discover his identity. One night, she placed ashes near the doorway. When the man left, his footprints showed the marks of an owl's claws. The next night, she hid and watched, and saw her husband transform into a great horned owl and fly away.
