The Rabbit Trickster (Chickasaw)
Chukfi (or Chokfi), the Rabbit, is the trickster figure in Chickasaw folklore. Rabbit is clever, mischievous, and always getting into trouble, but he also uses his wits to benefit the people. In one story, Rabbit outwits the wolves by pretending to be dead and then escaping when they are not looking. In another, he tricks the larger animals into letting him share their food. Rabbit's adventures explain many natural phenomena, such as why Rabbit has a short tail, why the possum's tail is bare, and why the deer has antlers.
