The Rabbit Trickster of the Kongo
Among the Kongo, the rabbit (sometimes called Nsumunu) is the greatest of all tricksters, smaller than nearly every other creature but cleverer than them all. In the most famous tale, Rabbit grew tired of drinking from muddy puddles while the great elephant and hippo drank from the clear river. Rabbit challenged them to a tug-of-war, tying one end of a rope around elephant's trunk and the other around hippo's tail, then hiding in the bushes and shouting 'Pull!' The two giants pulled against each other for hours, each believing Rabbit was on the other end, until they collapsed from exhaustion.
