The Rolling Stone Legend (Cheyenne)

epic · United States · North American

A Cheyenne boy was left in camp while the adults went hunting. A mysterious rolling stone appeared and began chasing him. The boy ran for his life, but the stone rolled faster and faster, crushing everything in its path. The boy encountered various animals who tried to help—a magpie pecked at the stone, a badger dug a hole for the boy to hide—but none could stop the pursuing boulder. Finally, a wise old turtle advised the boy to climb a certain tree. When the stone rolled under the tree, a branch caught it and held it fast. The boy was saved, and the stone remains there to this day.
